Why Cassandra and Alvaro Chose Isola del Garda for Their Elopement

A private island, a quiet morning, and two people who didn’t want an audience.

Cassandra and Alvaro are from the US, but their families carry Hispanic roots that show up in everything — how loud they laugh, how easily they hug people they’ve just met, how little patience they have for anything that feels stiff or staged. When they reached out to us, they didn’t want a wedding. They wanted a morning that actually felt like them: relaxed, unscripted, just the two of them.

Isola del Garda sits in the middle of Lake Garda, and that’s really the whole point of it — you can’t just walk up. The island is reachable only by boat, which means no day-trippers wandering into your ceremony, no strangers standing in the background of your photos. For a couple who wanted privacy over an audience, that’s not a small detail. It’s the reason we suggested it in the first place.

We planned the entire day ourselves — no wedding planner, no separate coordinator, no long list of people to thank at the end. Cassandra and Alvaro trusted us with the whole thing: the boat, the timing, the flow of the morning. That’s the kind of photography we aim for — recognizable, not staged. If you’re wondering how much you actually need to organize before flying in, our complete guide to eloping in Italy walks through exactly that.

Vows in the Cloister — Their Isola del Garda Ceremony

No officiant, no script — just the two of them and what they’d written for each other.

Cassandra and Alvaro chose a symbolic ceremony — no civil paperwork filed in Italy, no officiant required. That’s the arrangement most of our couples choose, because it means the vow exchange can happen wherever and however they want, with nobody but the two of them standing there. If you’re still deciding what’s right for you, our guide to legal vs. symbolic elopements breaks down both.

The boat left from the pier at Grand Hotel Fasano, cutting a slow line across the water toward the island. Neither of them said much on the way over. Alvaro kept looking at Cassandra like he was trying to memorize the moment before it started.

Cassandra read her vows first, standing under the arches of the cloister, steady the whole way through. Alvaro made it about halfway through his before his voice caught. He stopped, laughed at himself, wiped his eyes, and started again. I didn’t say a word. I just kept shooting.

Lake Garda Under a Grey Sky — Why the Rain Made It Better

The best light on Lake Garda doesn’t always come from the sun.

The sky stayed grey for most of the morning — low clouds, a few minutes of light rain, never quite clearing. Nobody had planned for that. I remember thinking, halfway through the ceremony, that we couldn’t have asked for better light if we’d tried.

Here’s what most couples don’t expect: an overcast sky is one of the best conditions for elopement photography, not the worst. Direct sun creates hard shadows and squinting. A soft, cloud-covered sky does the opposite — the light stays even across the whole scene, with none of the harsh contrast a clear afternoon gives you. If you’re planning a Lake Garda elopement and the forecast looks grey, don’t reschedule. It might be the best light you get all year.

By the time the boat brought them back to Gardone Riviera, Cassandra and Alvaro had laughed more than they’d planned to and cried more than they’d expected — sometimes within the same five minutes. That contrast is what we look for in every elopement: not a performance, but a day that actually felt like the two people living it. If Lake Garda isn’t the only place calling you, our guide to the best places to elope in Europe can help you figure out where else to look.
